Our Work

ATREE’s wide-ranging programs, housed within its Research Centers, generate knowledge and provide policy recommendations. The ATREE Academy offers PhD and Master’s programs in conservation science and sustainability studies. Our Community Conservation Centers work on ecological monitoring and community collaborations in five different locations, and The Himalaya Initiative is focused on biodiversity conservation and enhancing sustainable livelihoods of the region.

Research Centres

ATREE’s research centers have contributed knowledge and policy recommendations to address wide-ranging issues including land rights, water management, forest governance, grassland and wetland conservation, and land restoration. The current centers are: SM Sehgal Foundation Centre for Biodiversity & Conservation; Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies Centre for Environment & Development; and Centre for Policy Design.

ATREE Academy

ATREE’s Academy offers PhD and Masters programs (in collaboration with Manipal Academy of Higher Education and TDU respectively) that integrate natural and social sciences to address environmental and societal concerns. Many PhD graduates are currently employed in various national and international institutions.

Community Conservation Centers

ATREE’s five Community Conservation Centers (CCCs) are situated in some of the most biodiversity-rich and unique habitats in India. The CCCs support long-term ecological monitoring; research by doctoral students and interns; collaboration with communities on conservation and sustainable livelihoods; and interactions with local governance institutions.

The Himalaya Initiative

The Himalaya Region is a hotspot that faces the brunt of climate change, which will heavily impact its biodiversity, ecosystems, agricultural production, water resources, and human well-being. The Himalaya Initiative will seek to fill gaps in knowledge and data, engage local communities to create sustainable landscapes and inform policy making for this critically important part of the world.
